Brief
After a thorough review of the UK design industry, Isis Innovation appointed Maddison to a newly created role of mentor to advise on new IP and the technology transfer process.
Outcome
Isis Innovation recognise the value and impact good design has on the success of new IP. They piloted a scheme as part of plans to extend the Design Council's Designing Demand initiative to the technology transfer sector. Maddison mentored three research teams. The technologies include a smart electricity meter - Genie, a possible laser-based successor to RFID technology and a system for detecting surface water. The researchers were surprised by the design input and in particular how it helped to focus development, effort and the broad scope of the design input.
